Does the thought of global warming and its effects scare you?
Well, you’re not alone. It’s important, though, that all of us do something about it… right now! And the easiest, closest, and least-expensive place to start is right at home.
- Start with anything that uses electricity… heaters, air conditioners, appliances, electronics, and lights. The more electricity we DON’T use, the less emissions are generated to produce it.
- One of the easiest ways is to make sure all lights and appliances are turned off when not in use. What is niceabout this approach is that it is completely free. It doesn’t cost you anything to NOT use electricity!
- Take a close look at energy efficient light bulbs. For starters, you can save by switching all, or at leastmost, of the lights in your home to energy efficient light bulbs. Depending on usage, an energy efficient light bulb canlast as long as one or two years. By price comparing, you can easily find multi-packs of these energy efficient lights foraround five dollars. Talk about affordability!
Even if you are a renter, there are still ways you can help combat global warming. Speak with your landlord about weather stripping around windows and doors. Maybe you can trade some rent for installing it yourself.
Oh, make sure you also discuss a hot water heater blanket. They are affordably priced and are really effective. You never know until you ask. Be sure to emphasize that it can be a win-win for both you and your landlord… but the real winner is the environment.
Now we come to one of the biggest sources of global warming emmissions… the automobile. You may not be able to purchase a new hybrid or energy efficient car, you can still have a positive effect. When you drive, do you really need to? If at all possible walk, carpool, or take public transportation. Even if you leave your car home, just a couple of times a week, you are still doing your part.
So you see, there are many ways you can participate in combating global warming, and they are all very much affordable.
That’s the remarkable thing about the “green movement”… the simpler and more affordable it is, the more readily it is done and the more effective it is!
